Jotal for Mac
A calculator that works like a text editor. Type a calculation on each line and the answer appears beside it.
Useful for budgets, conversions, and the bits of math you’d otherwise work out on a scrap of paper.

How it works
Write 20 inches in cm to convert a measurement, or 100 + 15% to add a percentage. You can also work with currencies and dates.
Give a number a name, such as hotel = 540, and use it in later calculations. A line starting with # begins a new block; sum adds up the numbers in that block. Comments let you keep track of what they’re for.
See the full reference or browse the conversion guides.
The Mac app
It uses the same editor and calculation engine as the website, with a sidebar for saved pads, a separate app window, and light and dark themes.
Ordinary calculations work offline. You’ll need a connection for fresh currency rates, iCloud sync, sharing, and updates. Check the rate status before relying on an offline currency conversion.
Installation
- Download the ZIP and double-click it in Finder.
- Drag Jotal into Applications.
- Open Jotal and create a pad.
The app is Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple. The current build requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 27 or later. Intel Macs and older macOS versions can use the web app.
Updates
Choose Jotal → Check for Updates in the menu bar. You can turn on automatic checks there too. Updates use Sparkle and ask for confirmation before installing.
Update requests don’t include your pad contents. The server receives normal connection information, including your IP address. More about shared pads on the privacy page.
